Canine Semen Freezing
If canine semen is to be kept viable for a prolonged period of time, it must be frozen. Frozen semen is stored at -196 degrees Celsius for an indefinite amount of time. For long term storage, the semen is shipped to the ICG/Synbiotics facilities in San Diego, California. It is characteristic for studs two to four years old to have a high sperm count and better quality sperm than older or immature dogs.

Using vaginal insemination, the conception rate is equal to that of a natural breeding using intrauterine, or surgical, insemination the conception rate is even higher. Freezing semen ensures the continuation of your stud's genetic line through advanced medicine. Your stud can sire pups in other countries without being shipped. Meticulous documentation ensures quality and registration through AKC.

Fresh Chilled Semen Collection
To ship semen samples, we use fresh chilled semen. We like to coordinate with insemination veterinarian to determine the appropriate time for shipment. There are many advantages to a 'Fresh Express' breeding (or chilled semen) as opposed to a natural breeding, the most substantial of which is not having to ship the stud long distances. The semen is collected, extended, and kept at a very low temperature to increase sperm life span a few days. Younger males usually have a higher quality and number of sperm. Two collections and inseminations are highly recommended per A/I breeding. One collection is needed for surgical breeding. 'Fresh Express' transcervidal breeding has a conception rate of well over 90%.

Semen Evaluation
It is a good idea for males to be evaluated for semen quality several times a year.

Thyroid Testing
Testing for thyroid levels is used to help in evaluating the reason for poor semen quality and should be part of the breeding exam. The thyroid gland is a small gland that effects everything from your pet's hair coat to breeding.  HYPOTHYROIDISM is a result of too little circulating thyroid.  Clinical symptoms can be hair loss, dull scaly skin, dull brittle hair or oily skin.  Occasionally pets become lethargic and overweight.

Breeding dogs have a lack of libido, prolonged anestrus, low fertility, or shortened estrus.  A bood test can be done to confirm the diagnosis of hypothyroidism.

Medication, usually levothyroxine sodium (Soloxine) can be prescribed to improve the pet's overall health.  This improvement usually takes a month or more.  Follow up testing is required.

PennHip
Hip evaluation can be done as early as 16 weeks. Each canine breed has its own reference point to determine the elasticity of the hips. An early estimate of a dog-hip integrity is invaluable especially if the dogs intended purpose will be for showing or breeding.

The PennHip radiographic procedure involves a special positioning of the dog so that the dogs passive hip laxity can be accurately measured. For the comfort and safety of the dog, the dog is sedated as three separate radiographs are made for evaluation.

The total PennHip evaluation service includes sedation, three radiographs, office consultation, mailing and film evaluation. A PennHip evaluation results in a confidential report to the owner indicating the dogs Distraction Index (DI). The DI is a measure of passive hip laxity and is expressed as a number between 0 and 1. A DI near 0 would indicate no joint laxity and very tight hips. A DI closer to 1 would indicate a high degree of laxity and very loose hips.

Caring dog owners and veterinarians have long sought a reliable method to predict a dog developing hip dysphasia. PennHip evaluation may be done as early as sixteen weeks. This early estimate has improved many canine genetic programs.

BAER Hearing Test
Some breeds have hearing loss due to genetics. Dr. Mike Freeman tests hearing and works with clients to improve breeding programs.  He uses state of the art techniques and equipment.   Clients are seen in by appointment East of Dallas or at your club meeting.
